Mental Health First Aid training offered June 25

The Watauga Democrat - 6/8/2018

BOONE - Most of us would know how to help if we saw someone having a heart attack-we'd call 9-1-1. But too few of us would know how to respond if we saw someone having a panic attack or if we were concerned that a friend or co-worker might be showing signs of alcoholism. When more people are equipped with the tools they need to start a dialogue, more people can get to the help they may need. Mental Health First Aiders can even save lives.

Appalachian Regional Healthcare System, in partnership with NAMI High Country, App Faith Health, and VAYA Health is offering Mental Health First Aid training June 25 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Watauga Medical Center Auditorium.

Registration is required and the cost of the class is $20, but there is a scholarship fund provided by NAMI High Country to those who indicate a need.

Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. More than 1 million people across the United States have been trained in Mental Health First Aid and ARHS looks forward to adding to this growing number. For more information on Mental Health First Aid go to mentalhealthfirstaid.org.

Mental Health First Aid is for anyone wanting to be better equipped to help in a mental health crisis. You may be especially interested if you are a health care professional, teacher or school counselor, parent, caregiver, employer or supervisor, or a community or organization leader.
